Otodisc is pleased to present the first release by New York sound and video artist Aaron Miller. The 11 tracks on Modularia, produced between 2000 and 2002, build upon works originally composed for video installation; in expanded form, they reach far beyond the art gallery and into the pioneering acoustical spaces mapped by Tetsu Inoue, Stephen Vitiello, Pimmon, and Peter Rehberg. Like those artists, Miller's work falls somewhere between the grit and bluster of analog and the precision and sheen of digital. Created using a broad range of tools, from antiquated noise generators to MAX/MSP, many of Modularia's tracks explore the degradation of sound through recursive processing. Others use the cut and paste techniques of musique concrete. Miller's work walks a fine line between history and contemporaneity, drawing upon classic ambient ("Euphonius Lapse," "Deep Field"), microsound ("Symbol Ø"), and pop music ("Signaural"), and plays with many moods, from the anti-aesthetic to the sentimental.

Miller recently performed live video for Tony Conrad and Marina Rosenfeld. He is currently completing a master’s in humanities, with a concentration in music and media study, at SUNY Buffalo.

Modularia is a cD+ release, and includes a Mac- and PC-compatible QuickTime video for the track "Deepfield."

“An incredibly weird and wonderful recording ... all afizz with sampled percussion, bossa nova rhythms, and references to Japanese pop and eazy-breazy jazz.” — All-Music Guide
